Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
