This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
