The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
