Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

On the surface, this album could seem more like an arduous academic examination rather than a new pop record from a musician who just had a last single was a collaboration with a global pop star. Divided into 4 different movements and sung in thirteen tongues, this is a head-spinning symphonic album investigating female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward here, buoyed by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in escape overly academic chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, with sole credit going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to alchemize the past with modern styles, the ambitions feel much higher here, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her height, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly during a stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes in with comedic impact. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that the listener rarely quite know—or even wish to predict—what you will go to next."

Almost each track finishes at a totally distinct place than where it began. A track explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic work starts off dark and brooding, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves straddling the gap between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed primarily in English swells around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spins upward. That trick gets echoed by a different expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep source of hidden treasure that requires time to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While some big releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish banquet where the guests at the table, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
