In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
