From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.

Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.

“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release

However, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.

The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.

Yet some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained little new data.
