The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
